Sinds augustus 2021 is Berenice Verhelst universitair docent Classics aan de UvA. Ze studeerde (MA 2009) en promoveerde (2014) aan de Universiteit Gent, waar ze van 2015 tot 2021 ook actief was als postdoctoraal onderzoeksfellow van het Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (FWO Vlaanderen).
Als onderzoeker is ze vooral geïnteresseerd in Grieks-Romeinse epische traditie. Haar specialisme is de late oudheid en met name de Griekse epen van Nonnos van Panopolis (5de eeuw n. Chr.) en de epyllia en ekprhastische poëzie van de zogenaamd ''Nonniaanse" dichters. Ze past daarbij methodes en begrippen toe uit de narratologie, genre studies en de antieke retoriek. De resultaten van haar proefschrift over de directe rede in de Dionysiaca verschenen in 2017 bij Brill (+ digitale appendix). Ze is editor van Nonnus in Context IV. Poetry at the Crossroads (Peeters, te verschijnen 2022) en Greek and Roman Poetry of Late Antiquity. Form, tradition and context (co-editor Tine Scheijnen, CUP, te verschijnen 2022). Momenteel werkt ze aan een nieuw digital humanities project DICES (https://www.dices.uni-rostock.de/) over speech in de epische traditie.
Daarnaast is ze ook erg geïnteresseerd in alles wat te maken heeft met vertalen (theorie en praktijk) en de geschiedenis van Latijn en Grieks in vertaling.
