Caroline Kroon’s research focuses on classical Latin literature and spans the interface between literature and linguistics. Her linguistic research mainly focuses on aspects of language that serve a discourse-related function (such as particles, anaphoric reference, tense, modality) and on the relationship between sentence grammar and discourse grammar. Kroon’s literary research applies insights from discourse linguistics to the literary, rhetorical and stylistic analysis of Latin texts, with a focus on narrative genres such as epic poetry and historiography. Together with professor Irene de Jong (UvA), Kroon is currently supervising a research programme funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) on the various forms of narrative used in ancient war stories (Ancient War Narrative, 2010-2015).

Kroon studied Classical Languages at the UvA, where she earned her PhD cum laude under professor Harm Pinkster in 1995 for her doctoral thesis Discourse Particles in Latin. A Study of nam, enim, autem, vero and at. Kroon has worked at the VU University Amsterdam since 1993, where she has held the chair in Latin Language and Literature since 1999. She has served in various positions during her time at the VU University Amsterdam, including that of vice-dean (2002-2007; 2012-present day) and dean (2011). She is chairperson of the board of the National Research School in Classical Studies, The Netherlands (OIKOS) and serves as coordinator of the Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology (ACASA). Kroon is also a member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW), the International Committee for the Thesaurus linguae Latinae (Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften) and the International Committee on Latin Linguistics.
