Faculty Medal of Honour for Antonio Santarelli
At the annual Satricum Day, on Saturday 31 January 2015, Antonio Santarelli received the Faculty Medal of Honour of the Faculty of Humanities.
The distinction is bestowed on people who have served the interests of the faculty in an extraordinary way. Santarelli is owner of the wine company Casale del Giglio and of the land that contains the archeological treasures of Satricum. For some time now, the company has been involved in the Satricum archaeological project, in partnership with a team from the University of Amsterdam that is headed by Prof. Marijke Gnade.
A nome della facultà vorrei assegnare a Voi, Antonio Santarelli, il Premio d’Onore della Facultà. Vorrei invitarvi a venire in avanti per ricevere il premio.
Dean of the Faculty of Humanities Frank van Vree honoured Santarelli for the fact that ‘he has shown a warm interest in the excavations over the last ten years, as becomes already clear from the fact that he named two of his wine brands after it. Furthermore, he supports the archaeological field work, financially and practically, in multiple ways, not least by offering a virtual part of the grape harvest to make the excavations possible’.
The Satricum Day is organised by UvA's programme in Archeology, in collaboration with the Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology (ACASA).
